In reading IGN.com's review of Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment for XBox LIVE and PlaySTation Network earlier tonight, I noticed the reviewer's remark regarding the turn-based strategy genre.  Pretty much in a nutshell, he said that while such games have a cult (meaning dedicated) following here in the States, currently they're safer cost-wise to distribute in downloadable form than as retail, disc-based copies.  Bottom line is, while those of us who love our Dai Senryakus and Shining Forces and other great strategy games are dedicated and will buy such titles when they're released, the harsh and unfortunate reality is that first-person shooters, casual games, platformers, and other "mainstream" genres are more profitable, which is why we always end up with the industry equivalent of table scraps with regard to selection.

How can such a situation be overcome?  Well, what he said about digital distribution made a lot of sense.  If SystemSoft and Valcon Games (or some other localization company) would possibly try porting over an English version of the latest iteration to LIVE and PSN as a downloadable title, the field would be more balanced than if they were to try marketing the game next to Call of Duty and Mario at your local GameStop as a disc copy.  And it's very doable from a technical perspective; Daisenryaku 3.0 Perfect, the latest Japanese PC version, is still small enough to fit on a single CD, and yet the depth and sheer amount of features far exceed any console strategy game I have ever seen anywhere.  The possibilities should such a game be ported over with even modest 3D battle representations and future extra content (such as World War II units and campaigns) would not only give this little-known military tactical series new life outside of Japan; it could bring a revolution for the entire turn-based genre that currently is being ignored by developers.

Will it happen?  Valcon, we're asking!!!!!  Please contact SystemSoft Alpha and make this happen!!!
